Juba authority call on herders from neighbouring states to not
trespass on farms
Sudan Radio Service Juba, 23/07/12 – Juba county commissioner is
appealing to cattle herders trespassing on farms within the county to
return their animals to their respective states.
Stephen Wani Michael said the presence of armed cattle herders within
the county is causing destruction of crops and fear among residents.
“The cattle which are now around Juba County especially in Terekeka
are mostly from Yirol and Aliab in Lakes state, there are cattle also
inTigor at the site of Lobonok. And then there are cattle that come
from Jonglei state. All these people are armed, and we have raised
this issue to the higher level, because these cattle are causing
destruction to people’s properties. Some of these cattle herders
become violent and rob people as well. I have a lot of information
that comes from the Payams that they even take food and clothes from
people,” said Mr. Wani while speaking to SRS during a live program.
Commissioner Wani added that there is need for the cattle keepers to
consult the local administrators in the Payams before crossing into
the county with their animals.
“If you are coming with your cattle and you need a place for grazing,
you can agree with the local authority; be it the chiefs or so on. Our
people are good people, and they might give you a place away from the
areas which people use for cultivation. The issue of cattle is a
problem because the cattle come and they destroy the farms,”he added.
The Central Equatoria state Assembly had earlier this month discussed
the issue of cattle keepers trespassing grazing lands in the state,
and agreed to address the issue with the governors of Lakes and
Jonglei states.
