The National Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning has announced
the reinstatement of the 50% housing allowance and other allowances
for civil servants.

The Deputy Minister of Finance, Marial Awou, told Radio Miraya that
the payment of the allowances will start with government workers who
are in Grades 10 to 17.

Awou, said the housing allowances of the army and other organized
forces from the rank of Sergeant Major to the rank of Private should
not be scrapped.

He said that the resumption of the payment will depend on when the
Ministry receives money, adding that payments will be calculated from
the month of October.

'Now the decision was made just not only looking at the grades, but
looking at the incomes, looking at the gross salaries these people
receive, we found out that those workers that are grade seventeen up
to ten, I think they were receiving approximately four hundred up to
four hundred and fifty, and when you take away fifty percent of the
housing allowances they are left with around two hundred. So we
thought and this should in fact remain a principle, whenever we want
to reinstate we should start from the bottom. So the next round we may
go maybe from grade seven up to nine, they will be paid their
allowances and so on, until the last group will be the ministers.'
