[Abraham Agoth] By Abraham Agoth AWEIL, 19 March 2013 [Gurtong]-Addressing the vaccinators at the Aweil civil Hospital on Tuesday, the Director General for Ministry of Health and outgoing UNICEF Coordinator in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state Riiny Riiny Lual urged the vaccinators to be professional in handling children’s health especially when vaccinating young ones. “This is a global responsibility to fight polio across the globe not only South Sudan and it happens through collaborative efforts joined together. I am sure through media awareness in South Sudan; we shall get rid of this so-called polio in our new born nation. It will not be a responsibility of a health worker anymore but a collective responsibility by both media and the health personnel. This is a house to house immunization campaign and you as the vaccinators have a crucial role to play in implementing free polio South Sudan in the set objective years to come,” he said. Dr. Riiny congratulated the entire community of Northern Bahr el Ghazal local chiefs, mothers and the partnering health agencies such as World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) and other agencies which made it possible to eradicate polio in the country. He appealed to the mothers to cooperate with vaccinators by availing their children within these four days of immunization so the accessibility becomes simple and approachable at all times. He further recommended that they will work hard in the government to make sure that such days of campaigns are respected and guided as public holidays so that mothers who are working stay close to their children for easy coverage. Meanwhile the manager of Extended Program on Immunization (EPI) Kuol Manyang Diing says that his team has been in preparation to make sure that timely thorough immunization in the state is carried out without failure. “We are targeting 400, 000 children from zero to five years of age to be vaccinated against polio in the state and this is not an easy task as it sounds, it is a joint or multitask responsibility for the guardians, mothers and health personnel to make sure that this number targeted is reached and completed within four days of our campaign. We have trained 2046 vaccinators and 211 supervisors who capable to deliver this task,” he said.
