Nationality Directorate Warns Foreigners Against Acquiring South Sudanese Documents
The Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Immigration (NPI) in Eastern Equatoria State has promised to take their services to the rural areas, warning residents not to allow foreigners to acquire the important South Sudan nationality documents. 16 May 2013 By Peter Lokale Nakimangole TORIT, 16 May 2013 [Gurtong] – “Our Directorate is implementing taking towns closer to the people in rural areas.” “It is the government policy to ensure through all of us all citizens enjoying services equally and equitably irrespective of region, race, religion or ethnicity so long as we are truly citizens of South Sudan,” said the State Director Lieutenant Colonel Peter Gatkuoth Jacob. He said the directorate is determined to reach all the important towns in the eight counties of Eastern Equatoria State so that everybody can have an access to obtaining certificates. Gatkuoth also cautions against illegal acquiring of nationality documents by foreigners describing it as malice and vows to prevent such practice saying they cannot be entertained in the state. The Torit County Commissioner, German Charles Ojok urges the entire community of Eastern Equatoria to consistently cooperate by working together with relevant authorities to avoid sneaking groups into acquiring the South Sudanese documents. The commissioner said that such groups include Nyangatom of Ethiopian, Turkana of Kenya, Acholi of Uganda, Lango of Uganda, Madi of Uganda, among others. He notes that the government must be appreciated for ushering independence through the struggle for decades. The public administration minister caution citizens to be careful as he cites instances where South Sudanese men marrying foreigners to be careful because most of them may rush to take them by virtue of being married arguing that it is absolutely wrong. The Commissioner cautions the South Sudanese men to consider period their wives have spent with them rather than deciding the next day to obtain Nationality Cards. In March, the Nationality, Passports and Immigration Office officially launched its branch in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State. The nationality documents give rights to the citizens, for citizens identification, legal aspects, employment purposes, reduction of double names in government payroll, for national government database and allow students and business persons free movement especially when crossing international borders and also serves as a symbol of unity among South Sudanese.
