New SPLM Women League Inaugurated

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)-Women League in Eastern
Equatoria State (EES) has been inaugurated as the country celebrated
the 30th anniversary of the SPLM/A.

TORIT, 17 May 2013 [Gurtong] – Hundreds of party members turned up for
historical event which saw the official launch of EES SPLM Women
League committee and the party office in Torit town.

Ms Bibiyan Candido took over as the chair from Ms Flora Ikoli while
Hon. Samira Louis has taken up from Josephine Thomas as the Deputy
chair.

Some incoming committee members of the women league include Hellen
Siama Pasquale as the Secretary and deputized by Grace Tobs, Ms Amira
Al-haj scooped the position of Treasurer while Jennifer Nabongorika is
her deputy.

Christine Paul is the Information Secretary deputized by Rose Lachimi,
Veronica Biato, Hon. Elizabeth Adodo and Vergina Leju took up the new
positions of secretaries for research while Lina Paul and Josephine
Thomas are advisors.

Apart from Party leaders led by Felix Okanyi Remijo as both acting
chair and Secretary General of the Party at the State level, the
occasion also brought together the deputy Governor Jerome Gama Surur,
Advisor on Political and Administrative affairs Abdalla Meri Kapelo,
the Minister of Health Dr. Margaret Itto Leonardo, Minister of
Investment Hon. Stella Brenda Lorika, the State Speaker Rt. Hon.
Emmanuel Ambrose Ocholimoi, the Torit County Commissioner German
Charles Ojok and Torit County SPLM chairperson Savio Otwari.

“On my own and on behalf of the State SPLM Chairperson (Louis Lobong
Lojore), I salute you all. Your presence as women and men in uniform
overwhelms me,” said Okanyi.

“Today is the 30th anniversary which reminds us of the establishment
of the SPLM/A in 1983. Also, today is the Day our SPLM Party Women
League is officially inaugurated as a newly formed committee. To our
women, I would like to proudly say ‘Moburuk’ and go ahead with your
brilliant initiative. We remain standing by you and we continue to
need your support.”

He said the organization and development of women has been a gradual
process that has taken centuries to reach where they are today, adding
that it dates back to 1821.

“Our women stood by their men during the years of struggle to shake
off the chains of the oppressors and colonialists. The firs
colonialism being Turks from 1821 A.D. until the Mahdists took over
from them (Turks).

“The third group became Anglo-Egyptian Condominium and lasted from
1889 to 1956 A.D. while the fourth group was northerner with whom
Southerners fought two wars of liberation i.e. from 1956 to 1972 and
from 1983 to 2005,” Okanyi explained.
