Students Petition Leaders To Reopen Bahr El Ghazal University
The Bahr el Ghazal University students have petitioned the regional leaders to consider reopening of the higher learning institution. 18 May 2013 By James Deng Dimo WAU, 17 May 2013[Gurtong] - “We the students of greater Bahr el Ghazal University of Bahr el Ghazal do hereby welcome the initiative of the conference in which we can present our challenges that are facing the University,” said the statement presented during the greater Bahr el Ghazal conference in Wau. The University of Bahr el Ghazal state is important to greater Bahr el Ghazal and the Republic of South Sudan in general but the University is faced by many challenges including the long delay to reopen since the academic year ended in September last year while others public universities like Juba University and Upper Nile are currently operating. The students have also pointed out the transfer of Medicine College from Bahr el Ghazal University to Juba University is a setback to the University and the Region as a whole. They also complains about lack of reference books, in their libratory, internet services to meet the international standard, inadequacy of lectures in some colleges and learning facilities. The students also complained about lack of implementation on the payment of tuition fees by students as it was announced by the Ministry of Higher Education which will directly affect many students. They also lack grant payment in order to hire the part time lectures and the issue of feeding accommodation and the students grant service. “With these challenges, we are urging our regional leaders of greater Bahr el Ghazal state to intervene with the immediate reopening of the University just like others government Universities in the Country,” they said. The students strongly discourage the transfer of college of the Medicine from University of Bahr el Ghazal to University of Juba because the SPLM vision says “Take town to the people rather than people to town” adding that the college of medicine is more important in giving services during teaching practice teaching hospital and teaching science students of secondary schools in the greater Bahr el Ghazal region. The students also call for improving lectures’ salaries to attract more lectures and also the issue of lack of learning facilities building to be address.
