RUMBEK MARKET EXPERIENCES MEAT SCARCITY Saturday, 18 May 2013 14:18 | Rumbek market on Saturday experienced shortage of meat in its stalls.
All butcheries ran out of meat by 10:00 AM forcing buyers to scramble for intestines. The butchers blamed the shortage of meat on middlemen because they sell cows by high prices. Butcher Thon Bol told Good News Radio that butchers are not making money because the middlemen increased the price of cows at Rumbek auction market. Mr Bol said one cow sells at nearly 3,000 Pounds and a kilo of meat sells at ten pounds. He said only 15 cows were killed on Saturday, too little for the needs of meat in Rumbek. Market inspector Majok Adut accused butchers of deliberately creating meat scarcity. He said Rumbek authorities issued an order some months ago to reduce a kilo of meat from 20 to ten pounds and the butchers are not happy. Mr Adut said authorities are closely monitoring the issue of fraudulent middlemen. Prices of meat remain constant with one kilo of meat with bone at ten pounds and only meat at 15. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
