JUBA, May 23, 2013 (Gurtong) - A family member who preferred anonymity
accused the security officers of disrespect to the family members in
the house and the general public.

He said the crates of beers seized were meant for a different
occasion. “We were being harassed, intimidated and threatened not to
speak to anybody in security related matters,” he said.

An eye witness is also quoted as saying: “I personally saw the
reaction of MP Daniel Deng Monydit. The security officers took 50
crates of beers and 417 crates from the house of the former Governor
of South Sudan Bank.”

On Tuesday, hundreds of beer sellers were arrested and held at Rumbek
Police as they were accused of breaking the ban on alcoholic drinks.

“People are arrested and are not sent to court – their beers were
being destroyed – there is no compensation made by government who
ordered the ban on drinking of beers,” a business man in Rumbek
lamented.

“Government is disturbing us a lot – our business is collapsing and
government is imposing serious taxes on us,” he added.

Among people arrested on Tuesday were 12 foreigners who sell beers in
Rumbek central market.

On Wednesday, Lakes State government decided to set free all people
detained on Tuesday but all the foreigners refused to leave the
prison, demanding compensation from government.
