Over 250 Government Officials Still Working In Pibor Town
The Jonglei State Minister of Local Government Diing Akol on Wednesday said government officials are still maintaining their positions in Pibor County despite the threats that led to desertion of the area. 23 May 2013 The Minister of Local Government Diing Akol Speaking to Gurtong on the state of Pibor [Gurtong | Jacob Achiek Jok] By Jacob Achiek Jok BOR, 23 May 2013 [Gurtong] – Diing admits the area has become risky in terms of security but is also quick to point at the headways being registered by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). “Have you heard last week that Boma was recaptured from the Yau-Yau rebels and South Sudan army forces have advanced to Marua? They have also retaken Nyat, the wildlife center,” said Diing. Diing said SPLA are still controlling Pibor town, what he called full control of the town. According to Diing, the Pibor County Commissioner had remained with the over 250 civil servants with some administrative officers before he left for an urgent meeting in Juba. “I don’t know the accurate figure for our government officials who are still residing in Pibor but the commissioner was with around 250 government officials before he left for an urgent meeting in Juba,” Diing said. He said many civilians and other workers deserted Pibor because the David Yau Yau led rebels had threatened to strike. The Director of Bor County Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) James Jok said his office will be able to deliver relief assistance to the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from Pibor County on Monday. According to Jok, 19 families have taken refuge in the compound of the State Youth Minister Baba Medan as the rest of the IDPs headed to Juba for better settlement. One of the IDPs Martha Kaka Konyi said that they were brought from Pibor in an army helicopter on Saturday. He said they ran because of insecurity being created by David Yau Yau in the county. Minister Baba urged the IDPs in his compound to go to government identified areas so that food assistance can be delivered to them by humanitarian agencies.
