Upper Nile State Parliamentarians On Human Rights Training
Members of the State Parliament in Upper Nile are being trained on human rights issues to protect the citizens’ rights during their law making processes and debating. 23 May 2013 By Ariik Atekdit Malakal, 23 May 2013 [Gurtong] - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is conducting the two-day workshop which is aimed at broadening the knowledge of the state lawmakers on human rights. “The purpose of this workshop is to make Upper Nile State MPs understand the importance of human rights as a broad subject,” said Alfred Zulu, the head of UNMISS human rights department in UNS. “The training will enable them to know that whenever they are making laws, they should include human rights standards. They have to make sure that each law they make has human rights perspective. This is to promote and protect everybody’s rights. We can ensure that there is accountability in the state,” Zulu explained. Zulu said the workshop is the first of the kind conducted in the state to parliamentarians. “We have many topics that we are covering during the training. We are also discussing an overview of human rights situation in Upper Nile,” he said. The training covers human rights basic principles, parliamentary functions that promote and protect human rights and international human rights standards among others. Human rights promotion and protection is an important component of UNMISS’ mandate in the new nation. “The parliamentarians are now encouraged to include human rights when drafting laws of the state. Human rights knowledge is an everyday process. We do not expect them to change in one day’s time,” said Zulu. He encouraged the media to take human rights issues as an area of interest to report on and play an important role in promoting and protecting human rights in South Sudan.
