TORIT, 26 May 2013 [Gurtong] – Male inmates received 4 plastic sheets,
two each for remands and convict wards, and 20 sleeping mats while the
female inmates received 20 bars of bathing soap, 18 pieces of pants
and sanitary napkins.

The male inmates also received 130 pieces of blankets; 15 for
juveniles and 40 jerry-cans. The other items included plastic floor
carpets and 10 pieces of second hand clothes.

UNHCR head of field office in EES Ms. Etsuko Chida, accompanied by the
UNHCR Protection Associate Mr. John Wassey, officially handed over
items to the Director of Torit County Prison Col. Anthony Lemi Mimbe
and other key officials.

Chida said the donation is part of UNHCR’s efforts to the state
government aimed at improving the living conditions of inmates at the
prison.

Col. Lemi thanked the Torit UNHCR office for the generous contribution
which he said was a sign of togetherness and encouragement in the
management of inmates.

Franco Menya, an inmate appreciated the donations and urged UNHCR to
guide the government to stop cattle-raiding and improve security.

Speaking on behalf of female inmates, Ms. Ann Wamae also thanked the
UNHCR, saying the support will improve their sanitary conditions.

UNHCR after handing the items to the prison authorities proceeded to
Torit State Hospital and handed at least 50 delivery kits.

The hospital additionally received one bale of sanitary pads, 50
pieces of blankets, 50 jerry-cans and 10 buckets.

At the hospital, the Chida thanked the government of EES and pledged
continuous support to the various sectors in the state.

“UNHCR will always come for intervention since some inmates here are
confirmed returnees. UNHCR is pleased to continue availing support
and itself to the highest commitment to well-being of the people of
South Sudan and to handover the non-food items as witnessed,” Chida
said.

She urged the inmates to respect law by learning and changing from bad
to good behaviours to become respectable and responsible citizens.

“Believe me you would have learnt something, you would have learnt
good behaviour and become good citizens” said Chida.

According to Wassey, the donation is in response to the deplorable
living condition of inmates in Torit prison and the services at the
state hospital especially the children, adults and the labour words
based on an assessment earlier.
