The Education Ministry launched the National Professional Standards
for Teachers in South Sudan to advance quality education through
quality teachers.

General Education Undersecretary Deng Deng Hoc Yai said during the
launching ceremony in Juba on Thursday that the document will be used
to set teachers’ training standards across the country.

He said the Ministry plans to train 30 thousand teachers in the next
four years to provide better education in the country and the new
professional standards will make a big difference.

National General Education Minister Joseph Ukel Abango wrote in his
speech that one third of primary school teachers are untrained.

He said the National Professional Standards for Teachers in South
Sudan sets knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes required from
teachers.

The minister added that the document is an important tool for the
professionalization of teachers.

Eastern Equatoria Education Minister Michael Lopuke read the speech
because Mr Ukel was unwell to attend the launch.

The document sets seven standards on teaching and learning and its conditions.

It includes knowledge of the learners and how they learn, and the
subject being taught, teaching methods, assessment and evaluation
methods, learning environment, professional responsibility and growth
and Teachers’ Code of Conduct.

Eastern and Western Equatoria, Upper Nile, Warrap, Unity, and Northern
and Western Bahr El Ghazal State education ministers or their
representatives took part on the launch of the National Professional
Standards for Teachers in South Sudan.

USAID funded the preparation of the document.
