*JUBA, 30 September 2013 [Gurtong]- *A release from the U.S Embassy says that this immediate contribution is an addition to the $ 60 million that the U.S. Government has provided this year for humanitarian assistance in South Sudan and Abyei. The USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) has since September 15, provided nearly $65,000 in Rapid Response Funds (RRF) to AWODA, a local NGO to emergency latrines, bathing shelters, and hygiene promotion, benefiting approximately 7,800 flood-affected IDPs in Aweil North, Northern Bahr el Ghazal provide over a period of three months. RRF funds worth $128,520 have also been provided to another NGO, THESO, to undertake hygiene promotion and latrine rehabilitation at existing health clinics in response to flooding in Gogrial East and Tonj North counties of Warrap State. The U.S. Government will continue to evaluate the situation and look at other ways to offer support as and if needed. Early in September, most parts of the country were reportedly overwhelmed by floodwaters as a result of the heavy rains in the country.<http://www.gurtong.net/ECM/Editorial/tabid/124/ctl/ArticleView/mid/519/articleId/12920/President-Kiir-Drives-Support-For-Flood-Victims.aspx> President Salva Kiir said the government was taking immediate measures to respond to the needs of the affected population and seven million South Sudanese pounds was set aside to rescue the situation. A report by a nine-member taskforce formed to map, assess and propose immediate intervention plans indicated that approximately 37, 238 households are affected. Besides thanking the UN and other partners for responding to the emergency, President Kiir also called on the business communities, civil servants and partners to help the people affected with whatever they can during these difficult moments. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in a press statement had said the floods and heavy rainfalls have caused extensive damage to infrastructure in South Sudan especially roads and bridges, making transportation of commodities and humanitarian aid difficult. Several farms, houses and property have been destroyed and the situation is expected to get worse as the heavy torrential rains continue and River Nile banks have broken loose. UNMISS said it is assisting local authorities in areas affected by constructing dikes, a six-meter pedestrian bridge to allow passage over an area currently under water in the centre of Bentiu town and providing helicopters to assess areas that could result in disease outbreaks.
