Scared Civilians Seek Shelter At UNMISS Hundreds of frightened civilians are seeking shelter at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) facilities after fighting broke out in the South Sudanese capital last evening. 16 December 2013
*JUBA, 16 December 2013[Gurtong] - *“UNMISS can confirm that hundreds of civilians have been seeking refuge in the UNMISS compound adjacent to the international airport and at UN House in the Jebel Kujur area, a large number being women and children,” a statement from the mission said. The statement said that while UNMISS is not a humanitarian operator, their mandate is to protect civilians, basic water supplies and medical treatment are being provided. “We hope the security situation in Juba will quickly normalize to enable the civilians to return very soon to their residential areas. To that end, UNMISS calls on all parties to show continued calm and restraint,” the mission said. The UNMISS also took opportunity to deny any suggestion that the UN Mission is harbouring any key political or military figures.
