By Gabriel Mayom *RUMBEK, February 1, 2014 (Gurtong) - *UNOCHA estimates over 700, 000 people have been displaced and 123,400 others fled to neighbouring countries. UNOCHA says due to reports of recent clashes between government and anti-government forces in Jonglei, Lakes and Unity states have exacerbated the displacement of more people especially in Koch and Leer counties. Aid organizations have at least assisted nearly 300,000 people so far the majority "outside UN bases in rural areas." The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos visited South Sudan 27-29 January and discussed the humanitarian situation with stakeholders, including President Salva Kiir. Aid organizations resumed essential operations in Mingkaman including healthcare and water services following the suspension of activities due to insecurity on 22nd January. Some organizations continued to monitor security developments before deciding whether to return. There were reports people continued to arrive in the area, although people also moved from Mingkaman to Bor. Key needs in Mingkaman; are clean water, improved sanitation and healthcare, though the response in these areas has already improved people's conditions. Displacement continued, with violence reported in Jonglei, Lakes and Unity states. The greatest reported increase in people affected by the conflict was in Unity State, following ongoing fighting in the state's southern counties. They are 18 locations reportedly each other host over 10,000 displaced people. Another 123,400 people have crossed into neighbouring countries.
