A don in the University of Juba says Dr. Riek Machar has a wrong ideology

*JUBA, 5 January 2014 [Gurtong] -*Ustaz Abuolgak Them while addressing the
Lou Ariik Youth's meeting at Nile Beach Hotel in Juba on Tuesday said the
ongoing crisis in the country came due to Machar's belief in his tribesmen
for power.

"Machar thinks only of coming to power by mobilizing his tribesmen because
he believes they are strong and brave, that Nuer can fight against and
defeat the government," he said.

"It is there ever since; Dr. Machar always makes use of his community
members to struggle for him to get top positions."

Meanwhile, another don Ustaz Martin Mou Mou, a former undersecretary in the
Ministry of Higher Education lashed out at the international community and
some western governments for allegedly working for the fall of Juba to the
hands of Dr. Machar.

Mou believes the power struggle between Machar and President Salva Kiir was
a push from western countries for a change in the Juba for them to achieve
their interest at the expense of South Sudanese.

"There are people behind it (South Sudan crisis)," Mou bemoaned. "The
conflict should have not spread very quickly across the country like the
way it happened. This is a long term plan that was wrongly calculated by
its experts."

According to Mou, the fact that Machar has no accepted defeat means South
Sudan still has a long war to fight. The two dons warned South Sudanese
especially Dinkas not to take the issue as a tribal conflict, saying they
do not want to see a Rwanda-like genocide in the new nation.

Dr. Machar and his followers however accuse president Kiir of dictatorship,
saying they want a democratic South Sudan government for which they are
fighting.

The youth had called the meeting to raise assistance for the displaced
persons following the Friday attack by suspected Machar loyalists in Tonj
North county of Warrap state.

Thousands of herds of cattle were looted and at least 46 people were
reportedly killed as over 100 others were wounded during the bloody attack.
The dead according to state officials are mainly children, women and
elderly.

The Mid-December internal power struggle within the ruling SPLM party
degenerated into internal armed conflict pitting armed loyalists of
President Kiir and his former deputy Machar against each other..

President Kiir called it a "coup attempt" but Machar denied it, saying it
is a ploy to eliminate the president's critics.

The conflict quickly spread to Bor, Bentiu, Malakal and the latest in Tonj
North county of Warrap state.

It has worsened the humanitarian challenges in the country as almost
900,000 people have been displaced and are in dire need of assistance.
