By Abraham Agoth *AWEIL, 9 February 2014- (Gurtong) -- *In a press statement during their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, the women requested the national ministry of Agriculture through its deputy minister, who was present at the function to specifically ask for the tractors and other farm inputs. "We the women of NBGS are always lacking farming equipment. We encounter various challenges which are supposed to handle on our own when we have our farm produce available at hands," said Abut Mawien, Deputy Chairperson of the Association. "This time, we would like to request the deputy national minister of Agriculture to look into our request." The deputy chairperson of the State Women Association says the women have keenly observed that the country will economically be stable if backed by agricultural modernization. "We should not be dependent. Every one of us in this country is free to practice farming for personal sustainability and other economic growth to be independently marketable and reduce big market competitions." "Your request is heard and noted. I know it is necessary for you to have such equipment and tools to empower yourselves as women Association. Another thing is that your land is agriculturally fertile for farming," the deputy national minister of Agriculture, Lilly Albino Akol responded to the demands of the women. South Sudan has fertile arable land but according to the UN, only about 5% of the land is being cultivated. It imports most of its agricultural produce from neigbouring states.
