By Jacob Achiek Jok *JUBA, 11 February 2014 [Gurtong] - *Speaking on a local radio station, Prof. Aggrey Ayuen Majok, the vice chancellor of Dr. John Garang University said their plan is to relocate the university to a safe place. "The plan B would be to relocate to a place we think will be safe because you cannot really implement academic programmes when you hear gunshots from here and there," Prof.. Ayuen said. "You cannot guarantee safety of students and lecturers." He said the university administration is already pondering on how much it will cost to relocate. Dr. John Garang University was temporally closed when the fighting reached Bor on 18th of December. A university student was reportedly killed during the fighting there between government and anti-government forces. Even when the government forces recaptured Bor, the University administration found everything was destroyed by the rebel forces including documents. "Nothing was left functional from the University," said a student. The university premises had no permanent structures that could stay for long. The university then called Dr. John Garang Institute of Science and Technology, a branch of the International University of Moldova opened on January 28, 2008 as a promising institution for South Sudan. Former Governor of Jonglei State, Philip Thon Leek is considered the founding father of the university when he rejected taking sponsored 40 students to Moldova and pushed for a home-based university.
