County Commissioner Denies Claims Of Defection To Rebel Faction Authorities in Rumbek East County of Lakes state have denied rebels' claim that government forces have defected to their side in Kerich village, Lakes state. 11 February 2014
By Gabriel Mayom *RUMBEK, February 11, 2014 (Gurtong) - *According to a press release issued by the rebels' spokesperson Brig Lul Ruai Koang, which was extended to Sudan Tribune last week, over 700 government soldiers have defected from Rumbek East County at Kerich village on 5th February. They as well claimed to have killed many government's troops including the force commander in the area. David Marial Gumke, Rumbek East County commissioner however has denied the claim and urged the rebels' spokesman to apologise to the world for creating lies. "First of all, there is no barrack in Kerich under my command. Neither a civil servant nor an army official has defected," Marial said. "No one admires Riek Machar in Lakes state even when he was still vice president till now. The rebels' spokesman must apologise to Lakes state in particular." He said the state does not have a record of defecting to unlawful organizations, saying the state is always democratic and famous for its long loyalty to the Republic of South Sudan and protection of her civilians. "Rumbek East people; old or young are very loyal to the democratically elected president Salva Kiir Mayardit. There is nobody in Rumbek East loyal to Riek Machar and I am very confident," the commissioner said. "We are going to bring Riek to court for killing of our sons of Lakes state in Malakal, Bentiu, Bor and Akobo. We are now filing the court case against Riek in any competent court."
