By Abraham Agoth AWEIL 12 February 2014 (Gurtong) - This follows teachers' memo requesting authorities to permit them to have a peaceful demonstration on the streets last week over their delayed salaries. The said peaceful demonstration by teachers last week was suppressed and they were convinced to wait patiently for one more week. "Yes, they came to my office and I told them that not only their salaries but the whole ministry of education has not been paid both December and January salaries," said Deng. "I told them to be patient while I follow up with the ministry of finance. I was promised by the finance ministry and issued a cheque dated December 31 last year to wait for January salaries with full authorization to withdraw our salaries of December from the January transfer should the state transfer reach government's account." According to a teacher who prefers anonymity, teachers have been persevering with all hardships of low pay, other illegal cuts from their salaries yet and some months are not paid. "This is not the first to cause this kind of mess with teachers' salaries," the furious teacher lamented. "We are tired of this fraud. We are not going to let our December's salaries go unaccounted for this year. We must follow and find out the root cause of this." The minister also admitted the cut on teachers' salary 20% from 2008-2009. "Before my coming to this ministry, I heard that they were getting deductions of 20% from each one's salary for a period of two years but they did not complain," said Deng. "So, why not bearing these two months with me until I officially claim their salaries from the finance ministry as this becomes my daily business now?" According to the recent state budget which has been approved by the legislators, education and local government ministries take the highest share.
