By James Deng Dimo *WAU, 14 Feb 2014 [Gurtong] -* The Monday fire outbreak according to eyewitnesses took everybody by surprise and destroyed property worth thousands of pounds.. It started at around 12:30pm and consumed mainly the congested market square in Jou which is mostly occupied by vegetable dealers. Residents in the area could not establish the cause of the fire though eyewitnesses asserted that three children were seen playing behind a kitchen prior to the disaster. An eye witness at the scene, who only identified himself as Ziko suspected the children to have meddled with fire at the nearby cooking yard. "I was in the shelter but as soon as I was out, I saw fire smoke from one of the houses. The fire grew wild because of the wind and spread to the rest of the ghettos around," Ziko said. All houses including some shops and most household belongings were burnt into ashes including creates of beer. Madalena Karlo, one of those whose houses were burnt said she was informed late and she could not rescue any property from her house. "I thank God that no one has been burnt inside but everything in my house has been consumed," she retorted. She could not understand the cause of the fire because she said the first house which got burnt was not where she used to cook but a sleeping room for her children. Businesses came to stand still as commotion grew tense with several rescue attempts anyway proving futile. Fire extinguishers could not be seen at the spot though some wildlife officials came at the last moment. No casualties were reported and victims could not establish the exact value of their destroyed items. In 2012 fire disaster caused by motorcycle ignition also destroyed shops and homes adjacent to the same area with estimated amount of 40,000 worth property destroyed.
