Dear readers,

[image: IRINnews logo]As peace talks in Addis Ababa bring South Sudan's
belligerent parties together it's worth reflecting on the extent of the
crisis that has unfolded in that country since mid-December. Some 738,000
people are internally displaced and a further 135, 000 have fled across
borders to neighbouring countries. The number of dead and wounded is
estimated to be in the tens of thousands. A cessation of hostilities was
signed on 23 January but is not holding across the country. There is an
urgent need for food, clean water, healthcare, shelter, sanitation, hygiene
and protection that exceeds current humanitarian capacity.

How did it come to this in the world's youngest country? Is this a tribal
war? How can South Sudan move forward? These questions and more are
addressed in IRIN's latest multimedia production, South Sudan: Shattered
Dreams. Watch it here <http://www.irinnews.org/southsudan/index.html>. Send
us your feedback.

Kind regards

The editorial team at IRIN.
