JUBA, 13 June 2015 [Gurtong]-The theme of the Summit is “Year of Women
Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063” with the
agenda 2063 being a global strategy to optimize use of Africa's
resources for the benefits of all Africans".

Awan Guol Riak, the Minister in the office of the President told the
press at Juba international airport that the twenty fifth Ordinary
Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the
African Union will take place on the 14th to 15th of June.

“Today His Excellency the President of the Republic of South Sudan,
Salva Kiir Mayardit is traveling to Johannesburg in South Africa to
attend to the summit of the African Union. On the sideline meetings of
the African Union, today, there is a meeting of peace and security
council where our Foreign Minister Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin is
representing the President” said Guol adding that “In that sitting the
issue of South Sudan is also being discussed.”

Guol also said that the President will engage his counterparts in a
bid to find a strategy to bring peace back to South Sudan.

“The president will also engage his colleagues in the continent on how
to find peace in our country knowing recently the International
Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) had made resolutions
that are contradicting”

Regional leaders of the Great Lakes region during their meeting on the
2nd of June rejected direct participation of troika countries (US, UK
and Norway) in the mediation in the South Sudan peace process.

The leaders said troika countries should only play the role of
observer but should not be directly involved in the peace process
mediated by the East African regional bloc (IGAD).

“All these things they are within our region and the key players who
are trying to find a solution for our country. We are free to discuss
with them the possible ways for us to reach the peace agreement “said
Guol.

The Heads of State and Government will adopt the budget of the AU,
consider the report of the ministerial retreat on the first ten year
implementation plan of Agenda 2063, consider the report of the ad hoc
ministerial committee on the scale of assessment, and discuss the
issue of integration with a focus on free movement of people, goods
and services.

Other reports to be considered by the Heads of State and Government
during their meeting will include report of the; AU Commission on the
Ebola Crisis, Peace and Security Council on its activities and the
State of Peace and Security in Africa, including Terrorism, Radical
Extremism and Africa’s Response, Governance (with focus on African
Governance Architecture and Elections), Commission on the Situation in
Middle East and Palestine.

The Assembly will appoint 6 members of the African Committee of
Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) and 3 members
of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).

After discussing some issues raised by member states, the leaders will
proceed to adopt the decisions and recommendations of the 27th
Ordinary Session of the Executive Council before adopting the
decisions and declarations of the 25th Ordinary Session of the
Assembly.
