June 22, 2015 [WAU] –The summit is being facilitated by the South
Sudan National Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Hon. Awut Deng Achuil
who is also a Chairperson for South Sudan emergency on food security.

Among other officials present at the summit is Lily Albino Akol South
Sudan Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Mary Jervest Yak Deputy
Minister of Finance.

Addressing the summit, Humanitarian Affairs Minister Awud Deng said
“Our purpose of being here is to discuss on food security in our
County,” said Achuil.

“Am not here today to discuss political issues but only to discuss
food issues, the issues are about stomach and stomach only,” said
Achuil. “We need to access the states affected by hunger and how many
people are affected there, we need to come up with a collected views
on how we can help our people” she said.

“We have much information being collected by our partners on the
alarming food situation in our country that now needs to be address,”
said Achuil.

Achuil said an estimated population of 1.5 million people had been
internally displaced since the beginning of the conflict in 2013.

According to the Minister, the three most affected states by the
crisis Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile have experienced abnormal
migration of people and livestock, limited market functionality, high
food prices caused by rising inflation and depreciation of the local
currency, diminishing purchasing power, depletion of household stocks
and high cost of living.

She said that an overall of at least 4.5 million people in South Sudan
are projected to face emergency and food crisis levels between May
2015 and July this year.

The minister said the impact of green harvest from mid- July to August
2015 will marginally improve household’s food security in areas not
affected by the conflict adding that the number of people severely
food insecure will stand at 2.7 million people as from August 2015 to
September this year.

She mentioned that Humanitarian assistance in the Greater Upper
Nileregion has resulted in a downgrading of projected food insecurity
classification from emergency, the communities are likely to
experience acute food crisis as their agricultural activities and
livelihood had been uncertain.

As a result, Awud said the national government has procured 112,275
sacks of sorghum and allocated to 10 states of the country.

Due to the rainy season and poor roads, the national government had
planned to transport sorghum to Bahr el Ghazal region by air from Renk
of Upper Nile state.
