JUBA, June 29, 2015 (Gurtong) - 160 students under the government of
South Sudan scholarship went on strike last week Thursday demanding
the government of South Sudan to pay their 11months pending
allowances.

The Minister of Education, John Gai Yoh said in letter send to the
students through the Embassy that “the payment of the stipends is
based on the availability of funds; as such the government will not be
committed to pay these funds on regular basis given the current
financial situation of the country. This reality was communicated to
the students during the past years.”

The letter went ahead to say that “the students should understand that
the stipends paid to them is a privilege but not a right.”

Minister Yoh said that “those students who are unable to bear with
this situation and could not study under the above mentioned
conditions should register their names in the office of the cultural
attaché so that they can be transported immediately back home.”

However, the students’ Spokesperson, Kot Maker said the Ministers
message has been received with a lot of bitterness and regret.

“We have unanimously rejected the response and it has provoked the
situation on the ground. However, taking us back to South Sudan as a
consequence for demanding our rights is unbearable unless the ties
between Egypt and South Sudan are abolished this where we will
consider It” said Kot.
