By Jok P Mayom JUBA, 01 July 2015 [Gurtong]-Speaking to Gurtong on Wednesday, the army spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said, in a situation where violations are reported, there must be investigations conducted. “We welcome a joint investigation that will include the United Nation Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS) and all the actors on the ground including the SPLA to prove the report right or wrong” said Col. Aguer. “We will be happy to see the United Nation encouraging investigation and counter prove to prove that the report is valid” he noted. Aguer said most of the witnesses that have been used in the report are people within the United Nation premises adding that the respondents are supporters of the armed opposition forces led by former Vice President, Riek Machar. “They are supporters of the opposition and of Riek Machar in that matter” he said. “What so ever the reality you cannot establish it through such a means” Col. Aguer SPLA Army spokesperson said. However, the Spokesperson said that if any SPLA soldier is found guilty of committing atrocities then they will be brought to book. “If it is proved that SPLA soldiers and officers have committed such atrocities definitely they must be brought to court. These are punishable offenses that are established by the army against the laws of the Republic of South Sudan. Anybody that would have committed such a crime must go to court” said the Army spokesperson. In a report released by UNMISS on Tuesday it uncovers human rights abuses in Upper Nile region during the recent escalation of fighting in Unity State. UNMISS said it has found evidence of widespread human rights abuses allegedly committed by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and associated armed groups during the recent escalation of fighting in Unity State. The SPLA’s official spokesperson has dismissed the allegations of human rights abuses committed by government forces in the past, but has also welcomed investigations of such accusations.
