TORIT, 24 July 2015 [Gurtong] -- The Education Minister of Eastern
Equatoria State, Hon. Paska Hifita Oduho, has acknowledged key donors
notably the British government which provides part of the Girls’ Education
South Sudan programme as part of the grants in the country.

She said that, because of the proper utilization of the funds, her State
has noted great improvement and achievement both in enrollment and
retention of the school-going children.

She, however, clarified that part of the grants are being financed through
the country's national budget allocation.

Apart from seeking to eliminate registration fees at schools, in line with
the constitution, which guarantees free primary education, Minister Hifita
told Gurtong that beneficiary Schools may use the grants for a number of
profitable purposes including running costs, facilities' improvements,
among others.

In June this year, the South Sudanese National Education Ministry announced
that it released South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) 10 Million capitation grants
for 729 Schools countrywide.

Warrap State, being with the highest number of schools in the country
received SSP 2.7M capitation grants for 217 Schools.

Central and Eastern Equatoria States became the second and third
respectively as they received SSP 2.2M and SSP 1.9M capitation grants for
203 and 140 schools in that order.

Western Equatoria and Lakes States respectively received SSP 1.1 million
and SSP 1million capitation grants for 123 and 84 schools while Northern
Bhar El Ghazal and Jongolei States fell at the bottom of this year's
released list as both got SSP 722,000 and SSP 163,000 capitation grants to
cater for 56 and 8 schools respectively.

Due to the ongoing conflict, the three States of Unity, Upper Nile and
Jonglei, have been left out by the programme this year.
