---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ricken Patel - Avaaz <[email protected]> Date: Sun, Aug 2, 2015 at 1:17 PM Subject: Avaaz is buckling - in case you missed it To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> *Hi - resending in case you didn't see this one! * Dear Avaaz community, *I have some tough news:* the backbone of our community, the technology that connects us to each other in every campaign of hope and change, is buckling. When our engineers first built Avaaz technology, we never dreamed we’d get this big. The largest activist email list in the world at that time was 3 million, a tiny fraction of the 42 million we are today. The unprecedented success of Avaaz has strained our technology to the breaking point, with 5 site-wide outages in 4 months, and our team has been forced to admit that we have only one option: *We need to rebuild, from scratch. * This could be a real crisis for us, or a great opportunity to build the most powerful technology for social change the world has ever seen, tech that can carry our movement to heights we have yet to dream of. But our existing team has its hands full just keeping this massive machine running, and we need to hire new experts to build the next Avaaz. This is expensive, and if we want to keep campaigning all-out on climate change, conservation and human rights, we don't have the money. But if just a few of us chip in the cost of a drink or a meal out each, we'll have enough to meet this great challenge. *Click to help rebuild Avaaz stronger than ever:* * YES, I'LL DONATE €2 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=2&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €4 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=4&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €8 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=8&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €16 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=16&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €32 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=32&p=1> * To donate another amount, click here <https://secure.avaaz.org/en/avaaz_technology_loc_rb/?cl=8211093687&v=62350&OtherAmount> . Avaaz is much more than a website -- our tech is an unsung hero of our movement. We’re on our way to having taken half a BILLION actions online!! Just look at what it enables us to do together: - send *42 million emails* in a few hours (who else does this?!) - allow millions of us to sign, donate, share, message, call, post, and *lobby our targets.* - create thousands of *offline events* to bring us together, like the climate march. - allow any of us to start our own campaign - provide *rich interactivity* like our stories map and live chats - keep all our information and data, as well as our campaigners, *safe and secure* (this is huge) - *...do all of this, and MUCH more, in 17 languages! * We're all used to seeing huge websites like Facebook and Google function seamlessly. But *they have *thousands* of engineers. Avaaz has 15. *Our tiny team does incredible things, but we can't ask them to both do their jobs and this new one. We need a new team of top-notch tech-architects. Chip in to help rebuild Avaaz stronger than ever: * YES, I'LL DONATE €2 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=2&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €4 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=4&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €8 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=8&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €16 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=16&p=1> YES, I'LL DONATE €32 <https://secure.avaaz.org/DT_3_62350?bsCVAhb&v=62350&lang=en&cid=16742&c=EUR&a=32&p=1> * To donate another amount, click here <https://secure.avaaz.org/en/avaaz_technology_loc_rb/?cl=8211093687&v=62350&OtherAmount> . Avaaz is a unique and precious people-powered force in the world -- we're 100% member-funded and driven. We don't take money from governments, corporations, foundations or large donors. And the decisions about what we campaign on are made by our community. Avaaz is all of ours, and you, the community, are my and our team's boss. So as our boss, I'm coming to you with this recommendation -- let's raise the funds to build back stronger for our future. In many ways, we're realising the promise of what the internet should be, a force to allow citizens to come together without the mediation of big corporations or powerful interests. *Let's keep this precious, genuinely people-powered part of the world and the internet alive and well, with the best technology on the planet to help us all to change the world.* With hope and gratitude, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team. PS - if you're an outstanding technologist or know one, and would like to use your skills to contribute to, pound for pound, one of highest value pieces of technology in the world for social change, Avaaz is recruiting for a Chief Technology Officer and a Director of Engineering as well a Senior Developer.
