*BOR, 06th August 6, 2015 [Gurtong] *–Last month, Health officials in
Jonglei State declared an official cholera outbreak, after 20 patients were
admitted in Bor hospital and diagnosed with the disease. Most of the
patients are children below the age of 10 from Malou and Achengdiir
villages.

The Director of Red Cross in Jonglei State, David Gai Deer said the Red
Cross society is acting in response to the State’s cholera outbreak that
was declared by the Ministry of Health last month.

Gai said the South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) and the International Committee
for Red Cross (ICRC) are trying to make sure that the community of Malou, a
village located north west of Bor town be able to get clean water.

“We brought a purification machine so that water that is direct from the
river Nile can be purified and then distributed to the water centers. This
is because communities of Malou get the water direct from the River Nile,”
said David Gai.

Malou was one of places with high number of cholera cases in Bor County
which does not have access to clean water.

“We have one water distribution center in Malou, we have another one in
Achiengdiir and that should be able to assist the most vulnerable
communities get clean water so as to prevent the outbreak of water borne
diseases.”
