* JUBA, 02 July 2016 [Gurtong]-*Speaking to the reporters after the
meeting, Michael Makuei Lueth, the government spokesperson said after the
meeting that the directives comes after the approval of the presentation of
the minister of mining to make amendments in the Act.

Makuei said the Minister presented the first tracking and exploitation of
mining in the Republic of South Sudan.

“In that presentation, the minister requested the amendment of the mining
Act because he believes that the way it is drafted now, giving a very big
chunk of land to the explorers so that they can do exploration in that big
area is an obstacle to the progress and to mining itself” said Makuei.

He said, “It is worth mentioning that the Act provided for an area of
2,500Sq km per company. This area of course is very vast and for an
exploration company to have privilege over such a big chunk of land does
not allow progress and exploration in time.”

Makuei said the Minister of mining recommended the reduction of the area
and addition of other terms in the mining sector so that people can start
the process in a better way.

“Based on that and after lengthy deliberation on the topic, the cabinet
resolved that yes this is a very good presentation and that the amendment
is approved” Makuei said.

“It is even part of the agreement. In the agreement, the Mining Act is one
of the Act that is supposed to be amended by the Transitional Government of
National Unity (TGoNU)” he said.

“So the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Mining have been directed
to work together for the amendment of the mining Act so that the process
can start in time and so that we can also in due course generate revenues
in this field of mining” he noted.
