WAU, 12 December 2016 [Gurtong] – The conference will focus on finding
ground solutions to achieving peace and reconciliation among the
communities of Wau State.

Traditional chiefs from the three ethnic groups in the State, the
Dinka, Fertits and Luo including members from the Sudan People’s
Liberation Army, youth, women, the Islamic council as well as
representatives from the office of South Sudan’s ruling party SPLM are
participating in the conference.

Speaking during the opening of the conference, the Interchurches
Chairperson for Greater Bahr el Ghazal region, Bishop Taban Pabiano
from the Pentecostal church said the participants are expected to
convince their communities to bring peace among their people.

“The reason why we are using these groups is because we know that
chiefs are the leaders in their communities and also politicians are
the leaders in their communities, youth are those who are currently
holding guns and they can be the active people who can at the same
time easily move to pass the peace messages to the communities and we
involved women because women have learned a lot from this conflict,
they lost their husbands and their children,” said the Bishop.

“We have brought them such that we can dialogue between each other so
that we can reach a peaceful reconciliation process because we found
that each of these groups is accusing one another and may be each of
these groups have a problem with another group, so it is important to
bring them together so that we tell them that we want to remove all
the source of differences, hatred and how to advise them to have a
space of peace and dialogue among themselves,” he said.

Bishop Taban is optimistic that after the conference a solution to
achieve lasting peace in the State will be reached at.

The three days conference is being supported by the Norwegian Church Aid.

In August, Wau State Governor, Andrea Mayar Acho announced a peace
deal plan that his government was willing to initiate with armed
dissidents in the region.

The Council of churches said the dialogue would be their first step
towards the peace process in the State.
