Khartoum joins AU anti-LRA meetings in Addis Ababa

KHARTOUM (30 Mar.)

Sudanese army chief of staff Tuesday has arrived in Ethiopia’s capital,
Addis Ababa to participate in the meetings of the Joint Coordination
Mechanism of the African Union-led Regional Cooperation Initiative for the
Elimination of the Lord's Resistance Army (RCI-LRA).

The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), wihich origins from northern Uganda, is a
violent militant group led by Joseph Kony. It committed heinous atrocities
in northern Uganda, before extending operations into South Sudan, and it
moved recently to Congo and Central African Republic.

The Ugandan government over the past years accused Sudan of supporting the
LRA Joseph Kony. But, the Khartoum government denied the claim.“The Chief
of Staff Lt Gen., Emad Eddin Mustafa Adawi, has left the country for Addis
Ababa, representing the Minister of Defence to take part in the 6th
Ministerial Meeting of the Joint Coordination Mechanism (JCM) of the
RCI-LRA," partly reads a statement issued by Sudan’s army.

In June last year, Sudan government declined to join the African Union-led
Regional Cooperation Initiative for the Elimination of the Lord’s
Resistance Army (RCI-LRA) considering that the Ugandan rebel group had no
presence in its territory.
