Eastern Equatoria Civil Society Network suspends Imotong Youth Union

Eastern Equatoria Civil Society Network has suspended Imotong State Youth
Union from its activities until further notice for alleged deeply entering
into politics.

The Network says the Union wrote a political letter to President Salva
demanding for removal of Governor Tobiolo Alberio Oromo to be replaced by a
strong SPLM member.

The latter cites insecurity, burning of farms and many others as reasons
for the replacement of the governor. The network says, the content of the
petition letter written by the youth union is purely political and partisan
in nature, undermining the principles of neutrality in the work of civil
society organizations.

The letter was dated 8th June 2017 and signed by Imotong Youth Union
members.

Charles Okulu, Chairperson of Eastern Equatoria Civil Society Network, says
the petition is contrary to the principles of civil society. He says the
civil society should be working for the good of all citizens instead of a
political party.

Stephen Loki Atome, head of Imotong State Youth Union admitted that the
union wrote a letter, but says the issue has been worked out amicably. He
says the National Youth Union will arrive Torit to conduct a rally that
will allow young people in the state to know their mandate.

While Orupi David, union deputy chair, describes the suspension as
baseless. The network would have done consultation with the union before
doing any decision, he insists. David calls on the Union members to remain
calm and wait for the national dialogue declared by the president.

Governor Tobiolo Oromo Alberio says the state youth union wrote a letter to
the president for him to be removed because of security issues and
intimidation. He notes that he only deals with bandits to ensure the
security in the state is safe.
