Parliament Directs Education, Finance Ministries To Give Education Top Priority Imatong State Parliament has directed the Education and Finance Ministries to prioritise increase allocations of funds to the Education sector as an effort to boost learning opportunities for children in the State. 16 August 2017
By Peter Lokale TORIT, 16 August 2017 [Gurtong] –This follows Monday's heated debates held in the assembly’s hall, in Torit, following summons of two ministers of Education and that of Finance, by the State Lawmakers. Meanwhile, the State Finance Ministry has been tasked to forge close cooperation with the Education Ministry by ensuring that pay increments and allowances are given to teachers to for morale support. The State Education Minister, Hassan Urbano Alex admitted that most schools in the Counties are no longer operating due to teachers leaving their profession in search of other odd jobs in non-governmental organisations. He also reported that most of the teachers among those deserting the profession are even serving on voluntary basis. "Many teachers, I have noted, have continued to remain volunteers who are not in the government's payrolls. How do we expect them to demonstrate commitment when they don't have any compensation?" Hon. Urbano said. He revealed that a school run by volunteers in Imilai Boma of Geria County was shut down because all part time teaching force left for a Timber Company Limited for employment purposes. He also added that security threats have also made many schools to close down across the State.
