GBs are "attractive" because they are very cheap and
can work well in some soils. However, I take your
point about the need to measure water content
accurately in an irrigated environment. This is all
the more important where water is expensive and the
soils have a narrow band of water availability. There
are clearly some situations where GBs may used and
others where they should not be used.
