I just downloaded soya from the ubuntu repository using synaptic.
Everthing seemed to go all right, no problem with dependencies.  I then
downloaded the tutorial from the sight.  There was a file called
tut-setup or something that didn't work.  However in the tutorials
sections all the basic tuts ran fine.  I then tried the one for
character animation and got a seg fault.  

This is what it said in the idol interactive:
