OOC: sorry, this one's kind of long.
General A'amon sat back, staring at the now-blank screen thoughtfully. A moment before, he had spoken to one of his captains, who relayed several messages from various governments expressing concern over the disappearance of several Venasian ambassadors and the current blackout of information. Most amusing had been the message intercepted by Liutenant Janaki on Earth; humans had such a... bland, evasive way of phrasing things. Not so the Klingons, whose message from their homeworld had basically read "Tell us what is happening, or die!"
"Are you insane?" demanded a voice from across the table, "Do you want to bring every race in the quadrant down on us?"
"The other races don't know what happened yet, Senator. True, some rumors are leaking out, and they can speculate all they want, but until they know definitely, they won't move. In the meantime, finding our fleet will be near-impossible."
Senator A'srana, a stalwart-looking Venasian woman with a thin mouth, said, "You moved two months earlier than planned. Some of those were allied with were killed today. How do you think you will get the support of our people?"
"Those who died today were expendable. Our people are tired of being homeless, and tired of being diplomatic, A'srana. I trust they'll rally around us. You really ought to stay more in touch with the people, A'srana. You are a Senator, after all."
A flicker of annoyance crossed her face. As Senator of House A'srana, she was one of the most powerful leaders of one of the most powerful Houses. Now that their Leader was dead, she also stood likely to be given the Council seat... if the Council was ever formed again. She didn't like being told she wasn't in touch with the people. "If they were so expendable, then why didn't you get rid of Celana D'amondra? Of all the T'remea, she's the one most likely to cause problems."
A'amon smiled. "I have plans for her yet." Abruptly, he changed the subject. "Is the Venasian news crew standing by?"
"Yes."
"Good." A'amon rose. "It's time for me to address the galaxy."
A'srana watched the General leave. Instead of watching the address in person, however, she stayed to watch it from the safety of the office on the vidscreen. 'Have plans for her yet,' she thought scornfully. Well Senator A'srana also had plans, plans A'amon had no idea about, which she would put into action when the time was right, not two months before.
***********
This broadcast by General A'amon was recorded by the Venasian news, and then relayed to the different race worlds:
"My fellow Venasians. In the past couple hours, extraordinary events have taken place within our government. In response to increased public opinion, we have instituted a minor restructuring of the governing body. While we were established on Venase VII, the Venasian Council served its purpose well and with great dignity and prospertiy. However, with our current state of resettlement, they were forced to reevaluate our situation, and determined the Council can no longer serve the people's best interests. So they have asked me to step in and unite our people and more effeciently garner our resources.
"Of course, I could not accept such a position. After all, the Council has been in place for a thousand generations, and is the backbone of our society. However, they insisted upon this transformation, and it is with ultimate humility and a reluctant heart that I accept this great responsibility, with the caveat that the Council be fully restored once we have found a home.
"My first and foremost priority is, of course, finding a suitable homeworld. That work was already being followed by our scientific mission teams; they will simply continue that work with the help of our deep-space military vessels. My second priority will be to most effeciently serve our people's needs. In following that, I have recalled our all our T'remea and temporarily closed our embassies on other worlds. They will reopen in short order when the new structure has been installed. I will personally meet with our T'remea to discuss the situation and see how they will best serve in the new government.
"As you may have noticed, our military units have appeared in our colonies. There is no need for alarm; this is simply for your protection. As you are aware, there is usually an unsettled period following a change of government, and our military units have been called upon to dissuade any criminals who may try to take advantage of the situation.
"I am deeply honored to be leading our people at this time. We will, of course, continue to keep you all well-informed of our progress. Make no mistake, my fellow Venasians, we will prevail, and a homeworld will soon be ours."
General A'amon bowed, and left the podium.

Senator A'srana smirked. What a bunch of *kanasra,* she thought to herself.
