President Montgomery unfolded his hands from before him and nodded to acknowledge
Sam's apology. "First, Admiral Lassiter, I know I speak for everyone here when I say
how terribly sorry we are about your son's death."
"Thank you, Mr. President." It was obvious that the man was of two emotions. He was
still greiving for his son, yet he was angry as all hell at both 'attacks'.
"FOr you to continue to work through this time is a testament to your devotion and
loyalty to the Federation, and this sacrifice does not go unnoticed.":
"Thank you, sir."
"Now, as to this explosion: It would appear that we under attack, is that a fair
assessment?"
"With what we know now, sir, yes. With that said, Mr. President, we must now address
the next questions. What do we do now? Who is responsible for the attack, and what
do we when we know the answer to question 2?
For question 1, we need to maintain the image of being in control and that the public
is safe. That will be easier said than done. We must also start the investigation.
If the sniper activity and the explosion on Spacedock are related, which we can not
rule out at this time, then those that are responsible include Starfleet Personnel. I
think that a joint investigation with Starfleet Security *and* the FBI is a good
start. The FBI Director and I have worked together before, and I think that a
suitable team can be put together. On the larger picture, Intelligence assets must be
brought to bear. That would include CIA, FBI, and Starfleet Intell. We have to know
where the problem is, and be able to build a case against whomever it is. We are
talking external and internal, in and outside the Federation. The investigation and
intell will answer question two. Question three.... we build cases and go to trial.
We *WILL* have justice, and I mean Federation justice- fair and open trials. We must
also be prepared to use more extreme measures, such as a military-style strike or
raid. Starfleet Special Operations and Security forces will stand ready to carry out
such a mission at the direction of the President, or if so directed support any such
raid or strike to the approperiate law enforcement group. Mr. President, I can not
stress this enough, no matter what action is decided upon, it must be swift and it
must be decisive." Lasiter sounded totally professional, but all knew he wanted to
stomp on whomever did this. Everyone also knew that once it got out, all of
Starfleet, if not the Federation, would want to stomp...
