"Well, sir, security and Intell have not communicated well under previous commands, and that is one issue that I intend on resolving immediately," Smallwood said clearly putting the blame on Lorin.
Lorin merely raised an eyebrow.
K'Tael glared across the table at Smallwood. While the Admiral was clearly his superior, K'Tael would have been more than happy to rip off his eyes and ears and personally show the sniveling human who had no knowledge of the situation the true facts. K'Tael was not one to support political grandstanding such as this. Fortunately, Admiral Lasiter spoke before he did.
"What was that?", Lasiter said sharply.
Smallwood not feeling quite as cocky as he did before, but still self assured that no one would dare to attack the brilliance of one RADM Smallwood. "There have been failures in the past. It simply was not
encouraged. The culture was to be independent and self sufficient. Bringing in other departments would have been considered a sign of being uncapable of doing one's job..." Again, clearly shoving the blame to Lorin.
Lorin controlled himself...Smallwood had just made an enemy...this wasn't a sharp move on his part as it had been Lorin who had pushed hard for his promotion. He wouldn't respond here though...he took the high road...
Lasiter cut him off. "Admiral, Perhaps you did not hear me when we started. We are not here to fix blame, but to identify and fix the problems. I asked you to take on the leadership role of SF Security not because Lorin Renaud was not capable, but because I needed him for other projects. Taking him out of security was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. ", he said angrily. Very angrily. "Hindsight is 20/20. We have *ALL* become a bit complacent and over security, and that stops now. It stopped when the first shots were fired at the funeral. Now let's all get on the program, and get back to business."
Lasiter's backing of Lorin was what Lorin needed. This helped him realize that they had reached a much better place in their professional relationship.
"Admiral Smallwood, I will talk with you privately after our meeting is complete. Admiral t'Llhweiir, can you brief us on resources currently in the field...", that was the straw that got Lasiter to explode. Lorin had done well. Smallwood was now in the hot seat.
<snip>
"Since we all have work to do, I will ask my last question. Admiral Renaud, is Spacedock safe? Is it safe for ambassadors to have embassies on it and for Starfleet Command to be up there?"
Lorin stood again, "Admiral Lasiter-Spacedock is the crown jewel of Starfleet. It is safe as long as we follow through what has been spoken of here. No Ambassadors have contacted Ops about security concerns...the Promenade will still bustle with activity when the Red Alert is dropped officially. I only asked you remain off-base until I felt the situation was under control and for your own protection. We are safe...and we will get even more secure as we go on from here." To reinforce that he said, "Computer, drop alert to Silent Yellow Alert."
K'Tael was impressed with Renaud's actions. Since everything seemed to be passed the point of general concern, it was not risky. That said, he was making a clear statement to his superiors that he thought the station was fairly secure.
