>He marked the results next to her name that she should be primary
consideration for the next opportunity and logged her file.
>"Admiral Renaud to Dr. Serana D'amondra."
Ceran D'amondra, the young precocious daughter of Serana, answered the
page. Her face was smeared with something that looked like green icing.
"Oh hi Admiral Renaud," she said calmly, "Are you calling for my mom?"
Before he could answer, she yelled off-viewer, "MOM!" Then she
disappeared, licking a kitchen utensil with the same green icing on it.
A moment later, Serana D'amondra appeared. There wasn't any green
icing on her face - well, not much anyway - but there was plenty of flour in her
disarranged hair. "D'amondra here. Oh, hello Admiral. I would
apologize for my appearance, but you just interrupted a perfectly respectable
food fight."
>Dr I hope you are feeling better. Thank you for your time. Dr. Brennan
has taken a Leave of Absence due to injuries received in the Assassination
attempt on Admiral Lasiter at his son's funeral. You are the primary
recommendation for the CMO position. Dr. Basco has agreed to remain on in her
current position. Would you be willing to agree to the position of Interim Chief
Medical Officer until Dr. Brennan decides if/when he can return?"
Serana was clearly surprised. "Dr. Brennan's... condition has always
allowed for accelerated healing," she said, "His injuries were that
extensive?"
(response)
"I'm honored by my nomination, Admiral, but I have to be clear: You're
catching me at a strange time. As you know I've been conducting quite a
bit of research while the Stargazer is drydocked indefinitely. But my
foremost worry right now is the retrieval of my son. Do you want that
heading up Starfleet's medical program? Surely a captain or an admiral
would be more qualified, and certainly outranks me."
