Jared looked up from the brief he had been working on for some time. The interruption was welcome. "It is OK, Sandra. Put Mr. Reid through to my console."
"Yes, sir" was the quick reply from his secretary.
A moment later the face of Lasiter's new staff aide appeared. "What can I do for you, Mr. Reid?"
"Good day, sir. I am calling at the request of Admiral Lasiter. There is an investigation that he would like you to take over. One that has far reaching implications, that it must be done with care and diligence. Naturally he thought of you, sir. Would you be interested?"
Jared couldn't help but smile at hearing the name of an old friend. He had Lasiter had attended the Academy many years ago. At least, more than he would have liked to admit. They had been extrememly competitive in their studies and early careers. It had been a serious problem that had developed into a respectful friendship over the years. If he was calling, there was a serious problem.
"Just tell me when and where he needs me, and I will be there, Commander."
"To quote the Admiral, sir, 'As soon as practical'."
