"Yes, sir" was the quick reply from his secretary. A moment later the face of Lasiter's new staff aide appeared. "What can I do for you, Mr. Reid?" "Good day, sir. I am calling at the request of Admiral Lasiter. There is an investigation that he would like you to take over. One that has far reaching implications, that it must be done with care and diligence. Naturally he thought of you, sir. Would you be interested?" Jared couldn't help but smile at hearing the name of an old friend. He had Lasiter had attended the Academy many years ago. At least, more than he would have liked to admit. They had been extrememly competitive in their studies and early careers. It had been a serious problem that had developed into a respectful friendship over the years. If he was calling, there was a serious problem. "Just tell me when and where he needs me, and I will be there, Commander." "To quote the Admiral, sir, 'As soon as practical'." Jared checked his schedule to see what he could quickly shuffle and reassign to his staff for a moment. "I can be in San Francisco by the end of the day if you can get me a ship to get me there." "I have taken the liberty of diverting the USS Centurion to transport you to Spacedock. She is on an extended shakedown and training mission, and is awaiting your call, sir." "I will call her as soon as we are finished. Is there anything I should now about the case Admiral Lasiter would like me to work on before I arrive in San Francisco?" (Reid?) With that conversation over, Jared opened another line to the Centurian. It was time to let his taxi know he was ready for pick up.
