"So, tell me a little bit about yourself, Captain." It was clear from the tone in the Admiral's voice that he was truly interested in getting to know him.

"I rather suspect I'm a fairly typical Starfleet story, sir," Fitzgerald told him, getting himself a cup of coffee from the replicator, with a large addition of Irish Cream.  He also ordered a plateful of vegetables, with a modest portion of corned beef brisket.  He waited for the admiral to get himself a beverage and his lunch, and then accompanied him to a table.  "Grew up on starbases mostly, managed to spend a little time in our native Ireland, entered Starfleet Academy, was a strongly mediocre student, giving way to strongly mediocre postings until this, my first command."

Jared took a bite of the turkey club he had ordered while he listened to Colin speak.  He was impressed by the Captain's modesty.  He swallowed before responding.  "It appears that you have done a wonderful job with your command.  I have found that mediocrity is not necessarily a bad thing in a career. It probably means you are doing things right and have just not been stationed in the more ... 'exciting' assignments. How about your family," he asked before taking a sip from his water.  Jared suspected that Colin's family name meant his genealogy held a few exceptional stories.

"I do have a long family history of service, though.  In fact, there has been a Fitzgerald on the quarterdeck of a space or seafaring vessel ever since 1782.  An oh-so-great grandfather was first leftenent under Admiral Nelson at the Battle of the Nile, in fact."

With a raise of his glass, Jared offered a toast.  "To the dedicated Fitzgerald's, who have dedicated their lives to king and country."  Now knowing how comfortable Colin was in talking about his father, Jared did not specifically mention him, but it was implied that he was part of the reason for the toast.

Colin never brought up his famous father.  Either people made the connection, or they did not.  He would not force the issue.  James Fitzgerald's career had been long, and marked mostly by its solidness rather than by any particularly spectacular feats, until his death in battle against the Dominion.

"What field of service did you come up through before finding your way into command?"

(Colin?)
