<excerpt>"Are you saying that the Masters do not truly control your
people?" asked Daphne with a bit of surprise. "You are letting them use
your people to fight their battles?"

He waved his paw-like hand dismissively, growling. He choose not to
answer.

"If that'sss trrrue, why do you fight usss?" she asked, touching her
chest. "We can help you, help you essscape theirrr contrrrol. Why fight
yourrr own kind?" Tr'Lawsh hated to admit it, but there was a part of
her that wanted reunification. Perhaps too much blood had already been
spilled, but she had to try one last time.

"We fight you because we must. The attack into this space is ourrr chance to starrrt
new, and we can't rrrightly do that if we leave the serrrvice of one rrrace only to
become the slaves of anotherrr. We can not and will not allow ourrrselves to become
the pawns of anotherrr. We will earrrn ourrr frrredom, and we will earrrn peace."
Cheap freedom was not really freedom, at least it was not the freedom that he and his
people wanted. Only an earned freedom would be valued. Only an earned freedom would
last, and, unfortunately, to earn it a people must bleed for it.
