(ooc: never!!)

A silent pulse against her skin brought her to instant consciousness. She
opened her eyes to see the rising sun just begin to dispel the dark. Through
the bedroom window, she could see the dew weighing heavily upon the leaves of
the bushes outside. Matthew's sound proofing might be good, but she still
thought her delicate hearing could discern the first bird calls of the new day.

Matthew still slept soundly. His even breathing and peace-filled mind told her
this. She remained motionless for a minute, wanting to savor the feel of his
cool weight against her body for just a moment more.

The minute stretched until the chronometer pulsed again. Never before had that
been necessary since she had always arose on its first alert. Smiling at the
small indulence (it was impossible to do anything else), she began to slip from
the bed. She did not wish to awaken him.

He stirred but did not open his eyes. She smiled and padded silently into the
bathroom. It, like the rest of the house, was a combination of past and
present, much like its owner. She stepped into the shower and sighed as the
heated water flowed down her body. She closed her eyes and let the sensation
dominate her thoughts.

Her breathing slowed. For a time, she was back on her homeworld, remembering
things she had not allowed herself to recall for many years. There were
thoughts of her family. Some of them had escaped the revelation of her human
ancestry to hide within the Federation, some had not. Of those who had
escaped, some had met the fate that had nearly been hers: death by
assassination. She grieved for them all, but those thoughts changed to a
happier time when she was the beloved granddaughter of one of the Empire's most
powerful senators.

In the present, her smile softened.
