He stirred but did not open his eyes. She smiled and padded silently into the
bathroom. It, like the rest of the house, was a combination of past and
present, much like its owner. She stepped into the shower and sighed as the
heated water flowed down her body. She closed her eyes and let the sensation
dominate her thoughts.
Her breathing slowed. For a time, she was back on her homeworld, remembering
things she had not allowed herself to recall for many years. There were
thoughts of her family. Some of them had escaped the revelation of her human
ancestry to hide within the Federation, some had not. Of those who had
escaped, some had met the fate that had nearly been hers: death by
assassination. She grieved for them all, but those thoughts changed to a
happier time when she was the beloved granddaughter of one of the Empire's most powerful senators.
In the present, her smile softened.
Matt slowly woke to the gentle sounds of his babbling brook. No, actually, it wasn't the brook, it was his shower. He stretched, his arms feeling the emptiness of the bed that his mind had already registered. There was light, though not much of it yet, sneaking through the floor to ceiling windows.
He considered trying to get a bit more sleep, but quickly abandoned the idea. He had precious little of her time to himself, so he intended to use every moment she could spare him.
He slid easily from the bed and walked into the bathroom, pulling open the glass door and stepping into the shower with her, wrapping his arms around her from behind. "That smile for me?" he whispered into her ear.
