Carrhae nodded her understanding.  She could only hope that she had not done
permanent damage to their friendship.

"I should not have asked that of you.  It was too much, too soon."  She turned
to leave.  The door slid open as she approached.  Without turning back, she
said, "Samuel, I value your friendship greatly.  Should you feel it bearable to
attend, you would be most welcomed."

She walked through the door and disappeared into the corridor.

This had been one of the most difficult conversations in his career.  There was 
nothing about that it that he was comfortable with.  It was meetings like this that 
made being a commanding officer difficult, no painful.
