"This way, if you please," Kalina said loudly enough for all to hear.
Carrhae rose and waited for Samuel to accompany her.
Lasiter stood with her.
Outside, the verandah was now alight with paper lanterns overhead. On
a raised
platform was a round table surrounded by padded wicker seats. Amidst a bed of
loose dendrobium orchid blossoms, the centerpiece was a water-filled glass
bowl. Dendrobium orchids and Plumeria candles in seashells floated inside and
lend a light aroma that would not conflict with the food.
While each placesetting was traditionally Hawaiian, the foods being placed on
the nearby buffet not only included Kalua Pig (Hawaiian style roast
pork), Mahi Mahi, Lau Lau (steamed Polynesian spinach with pork and fish),
Chicken Long
Rice, Teriyaki Steak, Poi, and Haupia, but it was enhanced by what each guest
would recognize as delicacies from their own various cultures.
Carrhae's grandfather could not help but notice the presence of kheia
and irriuf mousse, neither of which had been his pleasure to eat in the many
years he had
lived in Federation space. He glanced at his granddaughter, and her returning
expression clearly said, "if one can not use one's contacts, what good are
they?"
Kalina led Carrhae and Matthew to seats facing the ocean and offered the seats
immediately to Matthew's right to Samuel as the best man and to Father
O'Malley. Carrhae's grandfather was given the seat to her left. The
remaining guests were free to find their comfort as they pleased. The table
configuration meant that all were equally positioned and allowed for as
intimate or
far-ranging a conversation as desired.
Samuel marveled, for the first time, at just how beautiful the sceneery was no
matter which direction one looked. It was no wonder that Carrhae loved this
place.
