"Do you think that means the Klingon Empire is ultimately esponsible for the
war that ensued?"
The Klingon rubbed his chin as he considered the question. It was not an
easy one or one that could be answered simply. "I believe that it was a
contributing factor to a situation that was declining into that direction in
time. It likely expediated what was going to happen, but it was by no means
the sole cause. The Cardassians were weakened by the war, which made their
alliance with the Dominion much more likely. The Dominion had been looking
for a toe hold into the sector for some time, and this helped provide them
with that. I do not believe that the war would have been prevented if
hostilities between the Klingons and the Cardassians had been avoided."
"So you think it was just one of many causes?"
"I believe your people have a saying about a straw breaking a camel's back,"
replied Koomah with a smile. "We were no more a cause than everyone else. We
just added to the problems."
Chase nodded as his interviewee spoke. He carefully took notes, though he
was not sure if this was going to be at all helpful. He decided to shift
things back toward dealing with the Federation. "How did the Klingons end up
working with the Federation?"
"How do such arrangements normally come about when two powers do not
completely trust each other. The logic of mutual need one out. It lead to
our two governments becoming even more united than they ever had before."
"Could you describe the overall history of Klingon interaction with the
Federation?"
"Confrontation would be a good way to start," replied the diplomat with a
smile. "Seriously, though, I think our people have moved from complete
distrust that bordered on open warfare to mutual admiration and detente. It
has not been a straight line between these two points, but there has been a
gradual improvement that I think has been beneficial for both sides."
Chase nodded as he listened and took detailed notes. "Do you think what
happened during the Dominion War was normal for the type of relationship
between the Federation and the Klingon Empire?"
"It was probably reflective of relations at that time," replied Koomah
simply.
"What were the high points of the war for the Empire?"
"I am a Klingon and not even I would say that any war has its high points.
There were many successes to go along with the failures, but those come
about through a great loss of life, particularly when considering the scale
of the Dominion War." Koomah's face showed how seriously he took what
happened in the long ago war. "Probably the best thing to come about it is
the peace that seems to have developed. People learned how horrible war
could be and did not actively worked toward it to the same degree as they
did earlier."
