A Runabout lifted off from station Io and headed back toward
Spacedock. With the mission completed, it was time for the team from
the station to return and make their report. Along with them, they
were bringing Gabe Ares, who had been brought aboard to help with the
investigation into the mysterious woman in the cryochamber.
"LtCdr Holt to Spacedock."
The familiar voice of Brad Arsineau responded. "This is Spacedock
Operations. Go ahead Commander."
"I am currently on approach to the station. I am requesting docking
permission and information."
"Understood" replied the voice. A few seconds later a set of docking
instructions appeared on her console. "I am sending over your docking
assignment, Commander. Is there anything you are going to need when
you land?"
"We have some cargo to off load. Other than that we are in the clear.
Please contact Dr. D'amondra and let her know that the package is for
her. We have someone aboard who is going to help her with it."
"Will do, Lieutenan," replied Brad, who immediately sent a message to
the good doctor. Aravis closed the line and set the thrusters to allow
them to land at the designated area. Once they were down, she turned
to the rest of the passenger. "It would seem we are home."
(response?)
As the ship floated through the Sol System, Gabe sat at one of the work
stations at the back of the ship. He was going over the scans that he
and Dr. Ingolsdottir had taken earlier. "Computer, are there any
entries in the Federation xenobiology database that match the readings
taken on the subject?"
"Working," replied the rich voice of the computer. "The subject
appears to be a member of the Letrosian race."
Gabe was not familiar with that species, which sort of surprised him.
He considered himself fairly knowledgable about the major sentient
species of the Alpha Quadrant. "Please bring up a summary of
information about the Letrosians."
"The Letrosians are a species that were identified by the USS James
Cook about 130 years ago. In early Earth history, they visited Terra
through a number of cairns that were interstellar transits of some
sort. They played a major role in many of Celtic mythology in the
roll of fairies. The females of the species have wings that are
clearly visible, while the wings of the male seem to have atrophied
through evolution. By the time that the Cook arrived in their home
system, the culture seemed to have turned in on itself with a
matriarchal society being its primary form of government."
Gabe's eyebrow lifted slightly as the mystery seemed to be goign
deeper rather than being solved. "What is the current relationship
between the Letrosians and the Federation?"
"Shortly after meeting with the Cook, the Letrosian government opted
to continue to remain blockaded off from the rest of the galaxy. They
did send a representative to speak with the Federation, but it did not
lead to membership or an alliance with the Letrosians."
"Did the Letrosians close of contact with those outside their system
due to military or political concerns?"
"The reason for Letrosian isolation has never been officially defined.
Many have proposed that the isolation was self-imposed by the
government. The leader of the Letrosians was resistant to outside
influence at the time of contact with the Cook. It was believed that
the Empress simply just ended up such conflict to avoid exposure to
political and social corruption by outsiders."
That might explain why Gabe was a bit unfamiliar with the Letrosians.
They were not really in circulation. That just added a bit to the
mystery of why this woman was being held in cryo in a facility so close
to Earth. He felt the thrusters kick in and realized they were
landing. It was time to disembark. They were going to have to look
into things once he got to his new lab on the station.
